Colon cancer can be prevented

Colorectal cancer is now the leading cause of cancer death for people under 50 in the U.S.1 But it’s also one of the most preventable forms of cancer. Colonoscopies help find and remove polyps — before they become cancer.

Colon cancer often develops quietly, but catching it early can make it easier to treat. That’s why preventive screenings are so important.

Due to the rise of colon cancer in people under 50, the recommended age to begin colon cancer screenings was recently lowered from 50 to 45. Starting at age 40 is recommended for those at higher risk due to personal or family history. Your Costco medical plan covers colonoscopies at any age at no cost.

Signs and symptoms of colon cancer

Talk to your primary care provider (PCP) if you notice any of these symptoms:

  • Changes to your bowel habits
  • Blood in your stool
  • Ongoing belly pain or bloating
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Extreme fatigue

Your PCP can help you schedule a colonoscopy and talk to you about what to expect. Some of the most serious health conditions don’t come with warning signs, which is exactly why screenings matter so much.

Don’t have a PCP?

Mainland employees can start with the PCP listed on your ID card. But you can see any provider in the network. Need help? Call the number on the back of your card. Or visit the Aetna Health app to find a PCP and view your digital ID card. You can also add your digital ID card to your smartphone’s Wallet app for easy access anytime.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month

A great reminder to schedule your mammogram, too.
