That’s why your Costco benefits offer a variety of free or low-cost programs to support the well-being of you and your children as they grow and mature.

Baby on the way or planning for kids?

Whether you’re planning for your first child or adding to your family, the Aetna Maternity Program* provides expert guidance and support before, during and after pregnancy. If you’re having a hard time conceiving, the program offers help for infertility, including coverage for treatments and access to a fertility advocate. 

Planning to adopt? Adoption Assistance from Costco provides up to $5,000 per child (maximum of two adoptions) to help cover adoption expenses, such as agency fees, attorney fees and transportation.  

Emotional health support

It’s never too early to help your child learn the social and emotional skills they need to have a happy life. Use your benefits to educate yourself on the best way to support your kids and to access the mental health services they may need throughout their childhood.

RethinkCare provides training, tools and resources at no cost to help parents, caregivers and children of any age manage challenges at home and school. The program also provides support for children with developmental delays or disabilities and can help parents navigate special education services.  

Families with children who struggle with ADHD, anxiety and other behavioral conditions can get access to therapy and psychiatry through Telemynd*, a program for employees and their dependents enrolled in an Aetna medical plan. Telemynd can support age 5+. Virtual therapy and psychiatry appointments are available with wait times under one week. Your plan copays apply. In addition, all employees can access 24/7 text-based or video therapy through Talkspace, available for teens age 13+ and adults. You can get six free sessions when you access the program through RFL.com/Costco.

Benefit choices that can save you money

Raising a child isn’t cheap. But your Costco benefits can help lower your family’s health and wellness expenses and make a big difference in your budget.

Costco medical plans

In-network providers save you money on doctor’s visits, dental procedures and more. These providers have contracted with your medical plan provider Aetna®, Triple-S or HMSA to provide services at a certain rate — usually much lower than what they would charge someone outside of the network. In-network preventive care, such as well-child checkups, recommended vaccines and dental cleanings, is covered at 100%. 

Institutes of Quality*

Through your Aetna medical plan, you have access to top-rated hospitals and facilities known as Institutes of Quality (IOQ). These providers meet your needs by offering excellent care and commitment to your recovery. When you choose an IOQ for certain bariatric (weight loss), cardiac (heart) or orthopedic (bone or muscle) procedures, Costco pays 100% of the cost of the hospital or surgical facility charges. You will still pay your cost shares for your surgeon, anesthesiologist and other non-facility charges. 

On-demand support

Unnecessary trips to the emergency room can be costly. If you need help finding an in-network urgent care facility on an evening or weekend, call the 24-Hour Nurse Line* at 800-556-1555 (TTY: 711) to find one near you. HMSA’s Online Care, for employees in Hawaii, and TeleConsultaMD, for employees in Puerto Rico, also provide employees and their dependents enrolled in a Costco medical plan on-demand access to care.

98point6** 

Save the cost of a doctor’s visit with on-demand text-based care through 98point6. You’ll be connected to a board-certified doctor who can diagnose and treat colds, the flu, rashes, allergies and many more common conditions. No appointments, no waiting rooms and no travel necessary.

Inspira Financial** 

A Health Care Reimbursement Account (HCRA) or Dependent Care Assistance Plan (DCAP) offered by Inspira Financial is another good way to save. These accounts allow you to lower your taxes by setting aside pre-tax dollars for eligible health care and dependent care expenses. Use an HCRA for things such as over-the counter medications, Band-Aids, copays and deductibles. A DCAP can help cover childcare, preschool tuition, before- and after-school care and more. Enroll in an HCRA or DCAP during Annual Enrollment in November. You can also enroll in DCAP during the year if your dependent care needs change.

In the classic Christmas movie It’s a Wonderful Life, George Bailey falls into despair after experiencing a financial catastrophe. He feels like his only way out is to take his own life. Sadly, this isn’t something that just happens in movies. People experiencing financial hardship are 20 times more likely to attempt suicide than those who don’t experience financial hardship.1

While Clarence, the angel who rescues George, is fictional, there is real-life help for people struggling with financial stress. Your Costco benefits are always there with free coaching, free counseling and in-the-moment mental health support to help you carve out a path to financial stability.

Money worries are a common problem

In a recent Bankrate survey, 52% of adults said that money has a negative impact on their mental health at least occasionally. Among those impacted by money worries, almost one-third worry every single day.  

A big part of those worries is debt. Life has become increasingly hard to afford, leading the average American to be over $52,000 in debt. Economic factors, student loans and increasing costs for housing, childcare, and even day-to-day expenses may set people up to spend more than they earn. These elements can combine to leave people fearing that they’ll never be able to pay off their debts. 

Help is here

If you’re having financial challenges, you’re not alone in your struggle. There is help and hope. The best thing to do is take a two-tiered approach. Get help to address both the financial stressors and the impact these stressors have on your mental health. 

Seek emotional health counseling 

If you feel like you’re facing a financial crisis, working with a trained mental health clinician can help you learn ways to reduce those overwhelming thoughts. Resources For Living (RFL), your Employee Assistance Program, offers six free counseling sessions you can use to help with anxiety about your financial situation and discover coping strategies to regain hope and control.

You can also take advantage of RFL’s free financial resources, including 30-minute consultations on topics such as: 

  • Credit and debt  
  • Financial planning 
  • Tax planning 
  • And more 

Reaching out is not a sign of weakness and doesn’t mean you’ve failed as a provider, a parent or a spouse, or failed to live independently. Rather, it means that you’re able to recognize that your financial situation is putting you under stress and that you want to address it.

Seek financial coaching 

A financial coach can help you strategize options or solutions going forward. Your coach will work with you to tackle your finances one step at a time. Together, you’ll create a personalized plan to improve your finances and relieve your stress.

You can get free, one-on-one financial coaching with SmartDollar®. During your video calls, your coach can help guide you on how to:

  • Pay off debt faster 
  • Create a personalized money plan 
  • Save for education expenses and retirement 
  • Get on the same page with your partner 
  • Feel more peace of mind

Schedule as many sessions as you’d like. And feel free to keep your camera off during your calls— your comfort and privacy matter.

A risk factor for suicide 

While many people are very aware of the negative impact of financial stress, few know that financial hardship is a major risk factor for suicide. Stress over debt or difficulty in making ends meet can increase anxiety, distress and depression levels — all of which can put someone at risk for suicidal thoughts. Mental health conditions can also make it difficult to recover from financial stress. It’s a loop that can be hard to get out of. 

If you or someone you know is having suicidal thoughts due to debt stress, money hardships, or any reason, seek emergency help. Call or text the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline at 988 or go to your nearest emergency department. Also call someone you trust – a friend, family member, coworker or clergy person.

November 1–21, 2023 

Annual Enrollment is your opportunity to review and make changes to your benefits plan elections for the upcoming year. It’s also the time to confirm eligibility for any enrolled family members to continue their coverage through 2024.

In late October, an Annual Enrollment letter and the 2024 Benefit Plan Changes booklet were mailed to you to help you with the enrollment process. If you didn’t receive these materials, or if you prefer to review online, you’ll find everything you need at Costcobenefits.com.

The recipe for a healthy, happy 2024

Follow this checklist to ensure a successful Annual Enrollment. You must complete these steps by November 21, 2023.

  1. Sign up for text reminders on the Enrollment Website at Costcobenefits.com.
  2. Watch the Annual Enrollment video to make sure you don’t miss any steps.
  3. Review your 2024 Benefit Plan Changes booklet.
  4. Complete your Dependent Verification to continue coverage for your eligible family members. This must be completed every year, even if you don’t make any changes to your benefits.
  5. Review your current benefits plan elections on the Enrollment Website. This includes confirming your life insurance beneficiaries.
  6. Enroll or re-enroll in your Health Care Reimbursement Account (HCRA) and/or Dependent Care Assistance Plan (DCAP) for 2024.* Remember, even if you’re already enrolled, you must re-enroll to participate in 2024.

To complete your Annual Enrollment, use your ESS user name and password to log in at Costcobenefits.com.

Help for hypertension

A new virtual blood pressure management program from Omada is coming in 2024. Omada for Hypertension provides one-on-one support and guidance from a personal health coach and clinical specialist, as well as the tools you need to track and monitor your progress. In addition, you’ll get a personalized care plan, weekly lessons and membership in an online support group.

Employees who are enrolled in a Costco medical plan and their covered dependents age 18 or older can participate in Omada for Hypertension at no cost, starting January 1. If you’re enrolled in Omada for Diabetes or Prevention, your health coach can also assist you with this service.

Peer support when you need it

Beginning January 1, all Costco employees, their household members and dependent children age 13 or older will have free access to Supportiv. This online peer-to-peer support program matches you with other people going through the same struggles you are, such as emotional challenges, parenting concerns, relationship issues and much more. The conversations are through live small group chat sessions that are professionally moderated and fully anonymous. It’s your place to de-stress and feel supported 24/7, 365 days a year – no appointment necessary.


Use your vision benefit throughout the year

Starting in 2024, your vision and hearing aid* benefits will be supplied through EyeMed. With this change, you no longer have to use your vision benefit in a single purchase — it’s available to use throughout the year. For example, if you buy a pair of glasses in January for $100, then lose them three months later, you’ll still have $75 to put toward a replacement pair. You must use your full benefit by December 31, 2024.

For Mainland and Hawaii only.

Taking care of yourself and your family can have a big impact on your budget. There are the everyday expenses, including medications and first aid supplies and larger ones, like day care and orthodontia. But here’s some good news: You can set aside pretax money to help pay for these items with reimbursement accounts, administered by PayFlex®. Even better news: You’ll also spend less on taxes.

Costco offers two reimbursement accounts. You can choose to enroll in one or both of them. The Health Care Reimbursement Account (HCRA) is for health care expenses, and the Dependent Care Assistance Plan (DCAP) is for dependent care expenses. You must enroll or re-enroll in these accounts every year, so make your elections for 2024 during Annual Enrollment, November 1–21.

The smart way to pay for health care and dependent care expenses

The Health Care Reimbursement Account (HCRA) and Dependent Care Assistance Plan (DCAP) allow you to pay for qualified expenses with money automatically deducted from your paycheck before taxes are calculated, lowering your taxable income. Here are answers to some common questions about these accounts.

What do they cover?

You can use your HCRA for eligible health care expenses that are not covered by your medical plan for you and your covered spouse and dependents. These expenses can include your plan deductible and copays, and many health care items and services, for example:

  • Dental and vision expenses
  • LASIK laser eye surgery
  • Orthotics
  • Reading glasses
  • Sunscreen

Your DCAP can be used to reimburse yourself for eligible dependent care expenses necessary for you and your spouse to work. Funds can be used to pay for childcare for your dependents age 12 and under, or to care for another family member incapable of self-care who lives in your home, such as a spouse, a child age 13 or older or a parent. Here are a few examples of eligible expenses:

  • Before- and after-school care
  • Care for a disabled family member
  • Child daycare
  • In-home aide
  • Nanny
  • Preschool tuition

Note: Your DCAP cannot be used to pay for dependent health care expenses.

How do they work?

When you enroll in an HCRA or DCAP, you choose an amount of money to put aside for the year based on what you think you’ll need to cover your expenses. This money is automatically taken out of each paycheck and deposited into your reimbursement account before payroll taxes are calculated.

You don’t pay taxes on this money. That means you save an amount equal to the taxes you would have paid on the money you set aside.

With an HCRA, you can pay for certain expenses directly from your account with the AutoPay function if you’re enrolled in a Costco medical plan. You can also use the HCRA debit card for eligible expenses, or pay upfront and submit a claim for reimbursement. See below for more details.

The HCRA will automatically reimburse certain medical, dental and vision plan expenses, including copays, coinsurance and deductibles.

Use for other eligible expenses, such as prescription drugs or over-the-counter drugs or items.

With a DCAP, you’ll need to pay upfront for an eligible item or service, then you’ll submit your receipt and a claim form through PayFlex to get reimbursed from your account.

Each reimbursement account has different rules and restrictions, as follows:

You can contribute between $120 and $3,050 per year.

To enroll or re-enroll in an HCRA for 2024, you must make your election during Annual Enrollment.

You can access the full amount of your annual HCRA election on January 1.

Rollover

Only a small portion of your HCRA balance can roll over to the next plan year. If you are enrolled in an HCRA for 2023, your rollover amount to use in 2024 is $610. This amount is determined each year by the IRS.

Use it or lose it

All expenses must occur during 2024. You forfeit any balance over the rollover limit that remains in your account after the claim filing deadline of April 30, 2025.

Contribution amounts

You can contribute up to $5,000 per year ($2,500 if married and filing separately).

Enrollment

To enroll or re-enroll in a DCAP for 2024, you must make your election during Annual Enrollment. You can unenroll or change your DCAP election at any time during the year if there is a change in your dependent care needs.

Access

Access is limited to the amount currently in your account. You can get reimbursed up to the amount of your year-to-date contributions, not the entire annual amount you selected.

Grace period

You can use the funds you contributed for any services through March 15, 2024.

You can submit claims until April 30, 2025. Any funds remaining after the deadline will be forfeited.

How do I know how much to contribute?

Be very thoughtful when choosing how much money to contribute to your reimbursement accounts. Look at what you spent this year on health care and/or dependent care, and consider how that amount may change in 2024. Money left in reimbursement accounts (except for the allowed rollover amount for the HCRA and the grace period for the DCAP) will be forfeited after the claim filing deadlines.

How do I get started?

If you wish to participate in a reimbursement account for 2024, you must enroll during Annual Enrollment, which ends on November 21, 2023. Important note: If you enrolled in a reimbursement account for 2023, you will need to re-enroll in order to have a reimbursement account for 2024.

The national average cost of a pack of cigarettes in the U.S. is $8.99, which (including federal and average state excise taxes) is around $273 per month or $3,281 annually for someone who smokes one pack per day.1

2. Enroll in a DCAP or HCRA.

With a Dependent Care Assistance Plan (DCAP), you can set aside pretax dollars to reimburse yourself for qualified child and elder care expenses. A Health Care Reimbursement Account (HCRA) lets you do the same with eligible health care expenses, such as copays and premiums. Save money on your taxes by enrolling in a DCAP and/or HCRA administered by PayFlex®* during Annual Enrollment.

When you choose an in-network doctor, you’re choosing someone whose rates are in line with your Costco medical plan.

4. Know before you go.

Only go to the emergency room when it’s medically necessary. This includes when:

  • Your condition appears to be life threatening
  • Your condition could worsen and become life threatening on the way to the hospital
  • Moving could cause you further harm or injury

If you’re not having an emergency, but need medical care right away, use 98point6 or go to your nearest in-network urgent care. Either of these options can provide the appropriate level of care and are far less expensive.

5. Use Costco Health Solutions* for your pharmacy needs.

If you’re enrolled in a Costco medical plan, you and your enrolled family members automatically receive prescription drug coverage, administered by Costco Health Solutions (CHS). Fill your prescriptions at any Costco pharmacy or through Costco Home Delivery Pharmacy and save.

6. Get a second opinion.

Whether you’re facing a cancer diagnosis, considering surgery or dealing with another serious medical condition, getting a second opinion from a board-certified specialist is often the smartest thing you can do.
