Foolproof turkey meatloaf

Consider this meatloaf recipe a blueprint, then tweak the flavor to suit your mood. Give it an Italian flair by adding basil to the meat and brushing the top with fat-free marinara. Or make it a Mexican-themed dish by seasoning the meat with cumin, chipotles and cilantro, then serving it with salsa.

Prep Time: 15 min | Total Time: 1 hour 10 min
Serves: 4
Ingredients:

1 pound 93% lean ground turkey

1 cup fresh breadcrumbs

¾ cup carrots, finely grated

½ cup mushrooms, sliced thinly or finely chopped

cup onion, finely chopped or grated

¼ cup canned tomato sauce

1 large egg

1 large garlic clove, finely chopped

4 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce

¾ teaspoon table salt

¼ teaspoon black pepper

¼ cup ketchup

Directions:
Step 1

Preheat the oven to 375°F. Line a large sheet pan with parchment paper or foil. 

Step 2

In a large bowl, mix the turkey, breadcrumbs, carrots, mushrooms, onion, tomato sauce, egg, garlic, Worcestershire, salt and black pepper using your hands or a wooden spoon.

Step 3

Shape the mixture into a 4-by-8-inch loaf on the prepared pan. Brush all over with the ketchup.

Step 4

Bake until an instant-read thermometer inserted into the center of the meatloaf registers 165°F, about 45 minutes.

Step 5

Transfer to a cutting board and let rest for 10 minutes. Cut the meatloaf into 8 slices.

How wonder works

Research finds that experiencing wonder, or awe, a few times a week can calm down the nervous system and decrease negative thinking. It can also trigger the release of oxytocin, the “love hormone” that promotes trust and bonding.1 People who experience awe reported feeling greater life satisfaction and improved well-being.2

Four ways to tap into wonder

Try these activities to bring the positive effects of wonder into your life.

Take an “awe walk.”

Pick someplace you’ve never been or imagine you’re walking in a familiar place for the first time. Turn off your phone, take a few deep breaths and tune into your senses. You may find what you notice — the perfect snowflake, a bird’s melodic chirping — gives you a sense of peace and connection.

Look for moments of kindness.

Pay attention to the people around you. Catch them doing good, such as giving up their seat on a bus. Reading or watching videos about inspiring people can also trigger awe.

Listen to music that moves you.

You know the songs — the ones that send shivers down your spine or give you goosebumps. This music can take you out of yourself and lessen stress and negative emotions.

Be open to what’s possible.

Get out of your comfort zone. Seek opportunities for growth and change. Then be awed by what you can accomplish.

A great way to make this happen is to work with an RFL well-being coach. You can have as many free and confidential sessions as you’d like to help you meet whatever goal you want to achieve.

  • Take on a new challenge, such as running your first 10K or half-marathon
  • Develop empowering habits, such as effective time management
  • Build relationships skills, such as improving communication and social skills

Why your why matters

Studies have shown that when you discover your why, you can improve all aspects of your well-being. You may feel more physically, emotionally and financially healthy, resulting in better relationships and stronger social well-being. In fact, people with a clear why, or sense of purpose, tend to exercise more1, sleep better, have less stress and report greater relationship satisfaction2

Not only can your why help improve your life, it can also improve the lives of others. Your why keeps you going when things get tough. It can help you be a more supportive coworker, a more caring provider for your family and a more engaged citizen in your community. Your why touches every corner of your life and, by extension, every person in it.

Finding your why

It’s often easier to identify your why with some help. Get guidance and support with six free counseling sessions from Resources for Living (RFL). Call RFL and work with a Care Partner to find a therapist that fits your needs, or use the new Alma online search tool to explore an expanded network of therapists. Browse the availability of therapists accepting new patients and filter by your preferences, including in-person or virtual, language or ethnicity, specialties and more. You can also use Alma to schedule as many free 15-minute consultations as you need to find the therapist that’s right for you.

3 steps to your why

Whether working with a therapist or on your own, these suggestions may help you get closer to defining your why.

Ask yourself questions to find your why.

Here are some examples to get you started:

  • What are your passions or core values?
  • Who do you want to help most in life?
  • What impact do you want to leave on the world?
  • What problem do you want to solve for?

Be kind to yourself.

Don’t judge your answers, no matter what. The kinder you are to yourself, the more honest you can be about what matters to you.

Write it down.

As you hone your why, write a short, simple statement that sums it up. It can be larger in scope or smaller and more focused. Feel free to write as many statements as you need to until one feels right. You can use this format to help you focus on what’s important:
“To ____ so that ____”

Here are some examples to get you started:

  • To prioritize my family so that they can be healthy, happy and comfortable
  • To seek new experiences so that I make the most of every moment
  • To pursue my art so that I bring beauty and inspiration to others
  • To serve my community so that I can make a difference in people’s lives
  • To stay positive so that I can be a source of hope for others

You might find that your why becomes clear right away, or you might not. Discovering and living out your why is a life-long pursuit and it can change along the way. But knowing your why is worth the effort in its positive effect on your health, happiness and sense of belonging.

High-protein sausage-egg breakfast bake

This breakfast casserole is loaded with veggies and protein, and it couldn’t be simpler to make. Keep it on hand for the week, reheating pieces as you need them for 2 to 2 ½ minutes in the microwave. (If you forget to thaw the frozen veggies ahead of time, you can microwave them for a couple of minutes to thaw. Be sure to pat them dry so they don’t release too much water into the casserole).

Ingredients:

4 sprays cooking spray

15 large eggs

½ teaspoon table salt

¼ teaspoon black pepper

12 ounces cooked chicken sausage, sliced

14 ounces frozen pepper and onion blend, thawed

1 cup cherry tomatoes

Directions:
Step 1

Preheat the oven to 375°F. Coat an 11 x 7–inch baking dish with cooking spray.

Step 2

In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, salt and pepper until well combined. Stir in the sausage.

Step 3

Spread the peppers and onions onto a layer of paper towels or a kitchen towel. Gently pat dry. Stir the pepper mixture and tomatoes into the egg mixture.

Step 4

Pour the egg mixture into the prepared baking dish. Bake until set, 45 to 50 minutes. Cut into 6 equal pieces.

While quitting social media for good may not be an option, taking a break can make a difference in your health and happiness. This is especially true for teens and tweens, whose social media habit can lead to things like sleep deprivation and a negative self-image.

What a social media break can do for you

Research suggests that although social media can be useful, it can also increase stress, anxiety, depression and even make you feel lonelier.2 By taking time off, you can gain:  

  • More opportunities to connect with friends and family 
  • Better mood 
  • Higher self-esteem 
  • A deeper sense of gratitude 
  • More relaxation and contentment 

Try grabbing a coffee with a friend, digging into a good book or taking a walk in nature. Then notice the difference it makes.

How to get started

There are no set rules on taking a social media break. You may simply limit your time to 15 minutes a day. Or opt to tune out completely for two weeks or more. Once you’ve figured out what you’re going to do, you may want to announce your plan online if you think people might worry about your absence or just to make it feel more real.

Cold or flu or ?

From sneezing to aches and fever, cold weather sniffles can be hard to diagnose yourself. But the earlier you determine if you have a common cold, the flu or COVID-19, the faster you can treat it and start feeling better. 7 ways to fight off winter illnesses

Get your flu shot.

It’s your best protection against getting the flu virus and can limit the severity of your symptoms if you do get sick.

Stay home.

Keeping away from others when sick limits the spread and avoids exposing you to more germs.

Cover coughs and sneezes.

Use a tissue or sneeze and cough into your elbow to help stop the spread of germs. Teach your kids to do this, too. 

Stay away from others who are sick.  

The closer you are to a sick person, the more likely the droplets and particles that can make you sick will affect you.

Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth.

80% of germs are transfered by touch. Germs can spread to the hands by sneezing, coughing and rubbing the eyes.

Wash your hands. 

Soap removes most germs. If not available, hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol can work.

Open a window. 

Viral particles in the air spread more easily indoors than outdoors. An open window or air purifier can reduce the amount of virus you’re exposed to.
